Coach Training for Leaders

Do you want to learn coaching skills so that you can use this proven, effective approach to empowering individuals, relationships, teams, and organizations? Our credentialing path programs equip you with transformational coaching skills and culminate in attainment of your coach credentials. The six-month training program involves 60 hours of experiential face-to-face learning, using quality materials and led by excellent, experienced coaches and trainers. The other major component of the training is mentor coaching, which helps new coaches hone their coaching skills.

Coaching is a powerful relationship where trained coaches assist individuals and organizations in designing their future by clarifying and focusing on their unique gifts and calling, and creating goals and strategies to achieve this future while improving their flow and ease in all of their lives. Coaching both develops the whole person/team and accomplishes the results they are aiming to achieve. In short, coaching helps people become more fully alive. Experience shows that coaching students not only learn to help others in their development, but have huge, transformational learning themselves.

Each three-day training event is designed to provide basic coaching skills and a strong understanding of skills, resources, techniques to support leadership teams in local congregations in moving toward effective ministry.  It is a fast-paced, highly interactive training that includes both theory and practice.  Participants leave with a set of tools for launching this ministry.

Coach Training for Leaders is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) for 155 hours of coach-specific education/training. All participants receive coach-specific training hours and a certificate of training at the completion of each training event. Upon completion of 60+ participant contact hours, 5 observed coaching sessions with written feedback, 10 hours of mentor coaching, and a final performance evaluation at the ACC level, participants are issued a Level 1 certificate documenting graduation. (Partial completion credit given for each module, as completed).

Coach Training for Leaders also hosts a monthly Community Call which provides additional support for CTL students and graduates to help them develop their coaching business and make connections with other coaches. The Community Call happens on the second Wednesday of each month, from 1:00-2:00 pm (Eastern).

About Our Training:

  • All training modules are presented in English, and are approved by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as Coach-Specific Training hours.
  • Coach Training for Leaders is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) for 155 hours of coach-specific education/training; You can find Candidate Guides for becoming an Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and Master Certified Coach (MCC) through ICF here.
  • Our Full Coach Training Program (3 modules, beginning with Coaching Foundations, plus Mentor Coaching) is offered virtually at least once each calendar year via Zoom (click here for upcoming training opportunities).
  • In-person training cohorts are scheduled periodically, often sponsored by Annual Conferences, across the continental United States (click here for upcoming training opportunities).
  • 10 hours of Mentor Coaching are required for certification; Mentor Coaching is offered twice each year, virtually via Zoom (click here for upcoming opportunities).
  • Each module may be used for CEU requirements.

Following the completion of Module 1 (see below), participants in the Coach Training for Leaders program may choose (mix and match) modules that most closely relate to their specific area of interest. Coach Training for Leaders recommends, as the “Full Training Program”, the standard path of Modules 1, 2, and 3, followed by Mentor Coaching.

  • Payment plan is available via registration form.
  • Individual modules 1-6 are available at a rate of $700 each for continuing education or non-professional training.
  • The cost of Module 8 is $1000 (30 contact hours; includes all materials and resources, as well as use of resources for coaching for one full year).
  • Full Coach Training Program; includes 3 modules (Module 1, plus 2 additional modules of your choice 2-6) and Mentor Coaching $3500.00.
  • If Full Coach Training Program includes Module 8, the cost is $3800.

Meet Our Experienced Trainers

Dr. Phil Maynard
Executive Director/Trainer

Dr. Phil Maynard is widely recognized nationally as a coach, author, trainer, and consultant, working primarily in the areas of congregational development, intentional discipleship, and leadership development. Phil took an early retirement from the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church, where he served as the Director of Congregational Excellence, to take on a full-time ministry of coaching, training, and consulting.

Phil is an ordained United Methodist clergyperson, a certified coach (ICF), an endorsed coach with the UMC, and certified conflict/mediation coach. He is the author of eight books on topics related to congregational development and discipleship and contributor to several other books. He has developed a wide range of training resources and leads workshops nationwide, equipping pastors and laity for effective ministry. He has also been a presenter at several Annual Conference events.

He is a second career pastor coming from a background of teaching at the University of Central Florida in the Radiologic Sciences Program.

Phil is the Director of Training and Development for Coach Training for Leaders; Director of Excellence in Ministry Coaching; and Director of Readiness 360.

Dr. Larry Ousley
Program Manager/Trainer

Dr. Larry Ousley is a recognized leader in bringing coaching to organizations and to leaders in all arenas, beginning his coaching career in 2000. Before going into private practice as a coach, mentor, and consultant, he served for 18 years as the Executive Director of the Intentional Growth Center at Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center delivering 50 learning, consulting, and coaching events and projects per year. Prior to this work, he served as senior pastor of three large churches. He is certified as a Professional Certified Coach by the International Coach Federation (ICF). He is also a Certified Organizational Relationship Systems Coach (CRR Global), a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CTI), and a Certified Mentor Coach (SUN). He is co-owner and a lead trainer with our ICF approved coaching school, Coach Training for Leaders (

Larry has led numerous long-term group and team leadership coaching projects, and has over 2,500 hours of experience coaching CEO’s, staffs, and regional leaders. Since 2008, Dr. Ousley has trained over 150 persons to be credentialed life coaches (ICF) through two different coaching schools. He is a contributing author published in several books including, Ministry 3.0 (2012) and Understanding Your Call (2018).

Church Leadership Training

Dr. Jim Robey
Director of Education/Trainer

Dr. Jim Robey is a minister and a Master Certified Coach. He was the first United Methodist clergy to be officially endorsed for the Ministry of Life Coaching. His ministry takes him across the United States and the world to work with a variety of church and non-profit groups. Jim earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and is a graduate of the Co-Active Leadership Program of the Coaches Training Institute in California.

Jim’s passion is equipping new coaches to coach leaders and teams to increase their effectiveness and sense of fulfillment to their calling. He has proven himself to be successful in bridging cultures, countries, ages, races, religion and gender. Jim brings a world view that embraces diversity and celebrates it.

Jim, an avid global traveler, once worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, toured extensively in the USSR, and studied in Geneva, Switzerland. He has led coach training and leader development events in England, Ireland, Kenya, South Africa and Swaziland (Kingdom of Eswatini). Jim and his wife Betty live in a cabin in the north Georgia mountains – their “serenity place.”

Lonna Lynn Euler Higgs
Trainer/Mentor Coach

Lonna Lynn Euler Higgs is a Professional Certified Coach, a Certified Coach Mentor and an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church. She is the founder of coaching4growing,llc, a life and leadership coaching practice serving clients across the United States. Endorsed for the ministry of life coaching by the United Methodist Endorsing Agency (UMEA), Lonna Lynn is on the faculty of Coach Training for Leaders, an ICF certified coach training program and is a member of the Clergy Coaching Network (CCN). She received her coach training from Coaching4Clergy and is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and Vanderbilt Divinity School.

Prior to answering God’s call to full-time coaching, Lonna Lynn spent twenty-nine years in pastoral ministry and non-profit administration. She is an experienced retreat leader, speaker, mentor and teacher. She serves as a Residency in Ministry Coach for persons entering ordained ministry and is known for her work as a worship planner and choreographer. Lonna Lynn is married to Rev. Lawton Higgs, Jr., Senior Pastor of Montevallo First United Methodist Church in Montevallo, Alabama. They have one daughter, Mary Hannah, a junior at The University of Alabama. In her personal time, you are likely to find Lonna Lynn power-walking, curled up with a good historical “whodunit,” searching for treasures in a thrift store, accompanying Lawton to University of Alabama sporting events (Roll Tide!) or playing with their furbabies—West Highland White Terrier Maddie Mac and Norwich Terrier Lily Rose.

Amanda Landry
Operations Manager

Amanda Landry has a lifetime of experience in the United Methodist Church. As a “preacher’s kid”, she worked several summers on the leadership team at a United Methodist Youth Camp in Florida. She went on to get her Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and to teach and direct at a United Methodist Preschool. She resides in Jensen Beach, FL where her most recent ministry opportunity was as Director of Discipleship at a local UMC, before leaving that position to work full-time for Coach Training for Leaders. She is currently pursuing certification as an Associate Certified Coach.
